The title of this album does cover the music and that says it all. Sometimes being a Dutchman is a big pleasure, on the other hand you readers might think that I'm not objective towards bands hailing from the Netherlands. But what can I do about the fact that bands like Asphyx, Epica, Heidevolk and even Vengeance release such quality albums in 2012? I am not telling you something new when I say that Martin van Drunen owns one of the most sick and brutal grunting vocals in the genre. You immediately recognizes his unique 'not to match by anyone' style. First track "Into the Timewastes" kicks you back in your chair within a second. Devastating, brutal, aggressive, up tempo, scorching riffs all carried forward on a hypnotizing style of drumming. Bob Bagchus shows again that he has an addictive drum style that gives the music of Asphyx something unique. After that the song "Deathhammer" hammers away (what else can you expect), again a rather fast song for an Asphyx track. The tempo slows down on "Minefield", a very slow track like we are used to from Asphyx. The doom tempo with the rather simple, but very addictive heavy guitar riffs drags you through the song from start to finish. "Of Days When Blades Turned Blunt" turns up the tempo again, after which the melancholy doom track "Der Landser" (about a German soldier transported to Russia) continues in the unique Asphyx style. "The Flood" (about the Dutch 1953 flooding) is again a riff driven song that reminds me a bit of the legendary Asphyx track "MS Bismarck". The title "We Doom You to Death" speaks for itself and the faster track "Vespa Crabro" with unexpected tempo changes makes you wanna swing your head again. The title of the last track "As the Magma Mammoth Rises" covers the music again, it is a slow and heavy doom track that again shows that music doesn't need to be complicated. Why make it difficult, if easy is much more effective? This album has set a very high standard for the doom and death metal bands that are going to release an album in 2012, can anyone beat this??? | ||||||||||||||||||
