I have never been into Deathspell Omega before I heard Parcleus. Of course I knew the band, but this was the first time I would really put an effort into listening to one of their albums. And what a rewarding experience it was. Deathspell Omega is not easy meat to digest at first but it is music that grows on you.

Paracletus is the third installment in a trilogy that Deathspell Omega started years ago. I have never heard the three albums back to back, so I will not delve into how well Paracletus fits in with the two previous albums. Be that as it may, Paracletus is a listening experience that can stand on its own without any problem.

I have called this progressive black metal, but make no mistake; this is still vicious and aggressive music. There is even a hint of death metal in the mix. The overall impression is that of an album that is both chaotic and structured at the same time, with complex riffing and with impressive vocal work. On top of it all the entire album is brilliantly produced. For me this has to be one of the premier black metal releases of 2010 and I can recommend it to black metal fans and fans of extreme progressive music alike.
