German Graveworm are capable of delivering a solid blend of brutal music. ‘Collateral Defect’ is exactly that: solid. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s best described as a slightly cheaper version of Dimmu Borgir with a heavy dose of Iron Maiden inspired riffing.

There is no doubt that Graveworm, with now seven full-length releases under their belt, are positioned in the better end of the melodic black metal spectre, but there is still in my opinion a long way to reach their peers, Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth.

Covering the Bonnie Tyler hit I Need A Hero is a slightly odd choice and, to be honest, it doesn’t really work. It had better been left out and saved for the fun of a gig where some of the drunks around my age might appreciate it immensely.

The track that works best for me on ‘Collateral Defect’ is the grooving hammer Out of the Clouds.
