Here’s another album to fall into my hands only recently even though this was released back in February.

Before first putting on this CD, the clues…artwork, moniker…all pointed to a visceral listening experience. In reality, Bloodbound turned out to be a much more melodic affair. Thankfully this wasn’t too much of a problem.

Thematically, War Of Dragons is characterized by a fascination for dragons. The album boasts a dozen fast, rousing, and anthemic songs. All the band members seem to work well as a tightly knit unit, but the vocals are particularly good – very solid and melodic, with choir vocals underscoring the songs’ dramatic effect. Case in point is ‘King Of Swords’, also one of the album’s heavier songs.

Naysayers will shoot down the album as cliché-ridden. While there is clearly justification in such an accusation, Bloodbound still sound like they’re in control of those clichés. Just listen to the excellent ‘Silver Wings’, which has hooks as gripping as dragons’ claws.

One of the better Power Metal albums of the year…fans of Stratovarius, Avantasia and Sabaton, take note.
