Obsidian Key is a one man progressive metal from guitarist Sonic V, a/k/a Paolo Zaino. First off, there is no mistaking that Paolo is an exceptional guitar player. Where the problems like on the album “LOUD!” is most other things. Being a one man show means that he does everything. All vocals, guitars and “drums” are all by Paolo.

Vocally, his harsh vocals are quite good. His clean vocals leave a bit to be desired, especially when straining to hit the higher notes. The “drums” sound like a bad drum machine. Apparently, they are electronic drums played by Paolo.

The songs are decent but are undermined by the aforementioned issues. The best thing that could happen is that he recruits a singer and at least a drummer with a real drum set. Obsidian Key is NOT Cloudkicker. Not everyone is Ben Sharp, and while it is admirable to have a DIY approach, sometimes it’s okay to get others to help out. Paolo has great potential and I do wish him the very best. He is a super nice guy and I hope this project becomes a full band.
