Deus X Machina, a
band from Buenos Aires, Argentina, was formed in
2012. They started as support of bands like Turisas
and Sonata Arctica and now, three years later, they
are finally going to release their debut album "X".
There are not many bands whose very first album is
good. But Deus X Machina is definitely one of them.
But "X" isn't good. It's amazing. To me, this album
is the perfect mix between Progressive and Power
Metal. Well, Deus X Machina is a Progressive Power
Metal band, but most of these bands have either too
much Prog and not enough Power or the other way around.
What I really like is that the songs are complex
regarding melody and instrumentalization, but also
easy-going and catchy. "Deus X Machina" for example
is a 12-minute-monster and usually I'm not the kind
of person who likes long and complex songs, since
they are mostly not well-structured and simply too
much of everything and I tend to skip the songs
after a few minutes. But with this song I didn't
have this problem, since it's also a very epic and
great song (there even are some guttural vocals,
which gives the song that certain something).
One of the highlights of the album is the cover of
Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger". It's like the same
song, just in a Power Metal style and all in all
very simple, but the cover itself is awesome.
Also, I have to say that Sebastian Ferraro is a
great singer. In some way, he is a typical Power
Metal singer with this high-pitched voice, but
compared to most of the other singers from that
genre, his voice isn't annoying at all, very
powerful and emotional.
What I miss somehow is originality. I hear too much
of Sonata Arctica in Deus X Machina. But it's only
the debut album, I think they can develop and create
their own style. But to put it straight, "X" is an
awesome debut album by an awesome band and I
definitely recommend this album to every Progressive
Power Metal fan.
