This
full-length debut from young German quintet Strangelet treads a fine line
between Glam sonorities and 1980s Metal with additional nods to bands such as
Bon Jovi, The Cult and even Metallica’s Black album. It has the ingredients for
something interesting but ultimately “First Bite” tastes bland on this
reviewer’s palate.
The album is
well-produced - credit to the band’s keyboardist - but inconsistent musicianship
and ineffective songwriting really drag the album down. ‘Snakebite’ and ‘Touch
The Sky’ are 2 songs that embody all this. Other gripes: ‘All That’s Left’ is a
cringeworthy ballad and the use of the cow-bell is gratuitous and irritating.
If bands such
as Neonfly and New Device are up your alley, then “First Bite” might be just
right for you. Otherwise check before buying.
