Neopera is a German sixtet founded by Dark Age guitarist Jörn Schubert in 2010.
The other rather known members are bass player Dirk Schlächter (Gamma Ray) and
André Schumann also known from Dark Age on drums. The bandname should give you
an idea of what kind of music you can expect.
The music is an interesting mix of power metal, opera and some heavy harsh
singing parts. There are three different kind of singers on this album. Mirko
Gluschke is responsable for the shouting, Thorsten Schuck takes care of the male
baritone opera voice and the female soprane opera singing style is done by Nina
Jiers. The songs are bombastic with symphonic orchestral parts and the different
singing styles are varied within the songs. Sometimes you are blown away by the
heaviness of the guitars, then again emotional piano moments pass by. The songs
are good and well arranged and vary enough not to get boring. If you need an idea
about what to expect, imagine a mix of Nightwish, Therion and a band like
Kamelot with 3 different voices. Epica is perhaps the closest band you can
compare them with.
I have no idea if this is a just one time project or if they want to play gigs
and even start to write a second album. For now this album is enough and I think
many will like this, I do for sure.
