With a band name derived from a classic Bathory album and a line-up consisting of: Alan Averill (vocals, Primordial), Patrik Lindgren (guitars, Thyrfing), Rune Eriksen (guitars, ex-Mayhem, Ava Inferi), Frode Glesnes (bass, Einherjer) and Nick Barker (drums, ex-Cradle of Filth, ex-Dimmu Borgir, ex-Testament, ex-Exodus) you'd expect a traditional heavy metal album with songs about big battles, swords and fights. Twilight of the Gods has made an album that captures the spirit and essence of the days when Bathory was a big unknown to most metal fans, merely an underground phenomenon, when Iron Maiden, Dio and Judas Priest were rulers of the earth and Manowar was making strong and honest metal ("Into Glory Ride", "Hail to England"). The band began as a tribute band to the mighty Bathory, and there are clear signs of the influence Quorthon has had on this outstanding debut album. This is to me classic heavy metal like I use to love it back in the 80s, before the hair metal bands, synthesizers and multi-layered and big pompous productions took over the metal world. Call it simple, classic and basic - I really don't care, because this is just pure and honest heavy metal to the core! "Fire on the Mountain" is a breath of fresh air, and a nice trip back in time, to the time when strong riffs, a good vocalist and a hard pounding rhythm section were all it took to make heavy metal worth your time. Sure, some might say: "those bands are still around", but to captures the spirit of that time is something almost no one is capable of today. A stellar debut album, and a big surprise in my book!
