American stoner/vintage rock band SpiralArms' debut album Highest Society arrived in 2010 and now is their follow-up album 'Freedom' released and this sounds very straightforward and is focused on the basics in rock 'n' roll music. This album is also more oriented towards their musical idols like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. In addition, it has quite bluesy, raw and very dynamic moods. Tim Narducci is the vocalist in SpiralArms and is a powerhouse at the mic and in the opening song 'Dropping Like Flies' he and the band throw me into my armchair with their energy and their groovy thick rock. Big fat Sabbath riffs and juicy Hammond keyboards are sweeping me off the floor in the awesome and swinging throwback track 'Hold Me to the Sky'. I get Monster Magnet, Clutch and Soundgarden in my head after some spins of 'Freedom', but SpinalArms plays with a bigger dose of psychedelic 70s rock and it is spiced up with something epic and unique. I have to mention the outstanding and cool song 'Drugs & Alcohol' with tons of groovy heavy rock. The standard is high in all the songs and I can't find any filler tunes in the tracklist. The deep and sensitive 'Lovers Leap' is a wonderful ballad and is a temporary interruption in the brutal and dusty stoner rock. I'm not the biggest fan of stoner rock, but this is a tasty meal that has so many nice Zeppelin, Sabbath flavors that I like it a lot. I fell in love with the slow title track 'Freedom'. It's a very sensitive and breathtaking track where I lose my breath. Stunning instrumental performances and with well written lyrics makes this a promising disc for the future. If
you like old-fashion 70s rock in a modern version, then this
is something for you to check out. I'm personally not an
convinced stoner fan, but I really like this
album, not a classic rock album, just a damn good rock'n'roll disc that's all... |
