Player was originally formed back in
1977 when Peter Beckett met J.C Crowley. The
band was completed by Ronn Moss and John Friesen
shortly after. Through the years the members
have changed and different projects have made
Players history a little incoherent. Player is
holding on to their very melodic songs with much
focus on the vocals and harmonies. This is an album that requires several turns to get under the skin. Beckett has an amazing voice and the years have been very kind to his vocal chords, no aging problems in the tones. It is, as expected, both balanced and elegantly produced. It is mature and well written rock, so what do I miss? I wanted to have more power in several of the songs. It becomes tame and toothless. I want more energy, flow and an awesome 'go' in the melodies and there is too many beautiful tranquil ballads that fill the more than one hour of music that 'Player' gives us. I like ballads in general, but not all the time. Thankfully, there are some real cool guitar parts, which rescue a fair overall rating for this piece of art. If you like melodic rock with strong male vocals and beautiful, rhythmic choruses then I am sure that Player is in your taste. Best songs: 'Precious', 'Man On Fire' , 'Too Many Reasons', 'Life In Color' and 'You're My Addiction'. Craig Pilo - drums, Peter Beckett - lead vocals, guitar, Ron Moss - vocals, bass, Rob Math - lead guitar, vocals and Jonny English - keyboard, vocals. |
