"Skies Fall" is the latest project from singer and composer Oganalp Canatan (Dreamtone, Dreamtone & Iris Mavraki's Neverland), and he has composed, recorded, engineered, mixed and produced the whole thing almost by himself. And the has had help recording the album: Onur Ozkoc (Rhythm & Acoustic Guitars), Can Dedekarginoglu (Bass), Semih Ornek (Drums) and Ozan Alparslan (Keyboards). A fine selection of prominent names does appear on this album: Hansi Kusch (Blind Guardian), Chris Boltendahl (Grave Digger), Tim "Ripper" Owens (Judas Priest, Iced Earth), Zak Stevens (Savatage, TSO, Circle II Circle) and Jerry Outlaw (Jon Oliva's Pain). The power metal with a slight progressive edge has strong links to some the bands mentioned above, but I do think Oganalp has taken on too many responsibilities to pull this off. For one; his vocal performance falls short compared to the strong ensemble he has put together. He is not a bad singer, but the others just shine brighter. I am not sure whether or not the limitations in the production are due to lack of funds or his total control over things. Those things aside, this is not a half bad album; Oganalp has written a solid and interesting album with some really interesting songs on it. Not surprisingly my favorites include the songs where Hansi, Ripper and Zak make their appearance, those song stand the test, and so do "Hide and Seek". The rest falls a bit short, which is a real shame because the songs do clearly have the quality and technical level to compete. Fans of Iced Earth, Blind Guardian and Demons and Wizards should give this a serious consideration... | ||||||||||||||||||
