The third and long awaited album from Doug Aldrich and his old band Burning Rain is a lustful and ripe experience that feels incredibly enthusiastically from all members of the band. It simply overflows of commitment and desire to play. The first track 'Sweet Little Baby Thing' is a killer track with groove and bluey guitar chords and is a wonderful intro song. The time since the previous album has been spent extremely well (13 years), because this album contains twelve tight melodic hard rock tracks, which are steaming of blues and have rhythmic refrains. The faster tracks are written from old 80's hard rock school books and rock like hell. It's a great mix of tracks with both quicker rock 'n' roll songs and slow sensitive ballads, always with a high quality stamp to it. Keith St. John is truly a masterful vocalist and seems to enjoy to sing the songs that probably already have been recorded for quite some time. This sounds so promising that I really hope that they give it a future further than 'Epic Obsession'. Doug gives himself more space to spread his wings than he may be doing in Whitesnake. 'Pray Out Loud' is a heavy 'kick ass' track with superb guitars. Of course a lot of it sounds quite similar to Whitesnake, but with a younger voice. Keith has a clearer tone and handles the higher notes perfectly. 'Epic Obsession' is something to play loud at the summer party, that's a fact. I've been listening to all three albums from Burning Rain and this is the strongest of them all. I hope that they will build something more after this release and maybe tour together. With three strong albums they can entertain a crowd for a long night. The cover of Led Zeppelins "Kashmir" is magical and I usually don't like covers, but this is a good one. If you are a fan of melodic hard rock, don't hesitate about this purchase. A must buy album!! Line up. |
