There are several symphonic metal bands that are fronted by a female vocalist such like Nightwish, Epica, Edenbridge, Sirenia and Leaves' Eyes and so on. Arven from Germany is not only fronted by a powerful female vocalist, no this is (almost) a whole orchestra with five professional ladies, with the addition of one gentleman on the drums. 'Black is the Colour' is their second album. Their debut disc 'Music of Light' was released in 2011. 'Black is the Colour' kicks off with a high pace track 'Believe' and the extreme high pitched voice of Carina Hanselmann is like balm to my ears. Far from the dark and grainy metal vocalists I'm used to listen to. One of the best songs on the album is the Irish inspired track 'Don't Look Back' with some progressive parts. Let's jump to the best song on the album 'The One for Me' with a guest vocalist 'Stefan Schmidt' (Van Canto), who creates a big difference in the sound picture on this track. He and Carina forced me to raise the volume a bit and hit the replay button. 'Cercle D Emeraude' is an epic metal track with violins and medieval feelings. They have many slower songs on the album and none of them grab my attention. I like 'In Your Dreams', which is the best of the slower ones, with sharp guitar riffs and heavy hefty drums. 'Fireside Stories' is a pompous tune, but hasn't the heaviness I want to hear. 'My Fall' is a nice candy bar with strong guitar playing. The title track is sadly a sleeping pill for me, skip button! Well, well this is a disc for the fans of the symphonic female fronted metal and nobody else. I have my four favourite songs on the
album and I'm satisfied with them. A too uneven
album for me, so my recommendation is a purchase, if you
liked 'Music of Light'. |
