After 15 years as a AC/DC cover band, and one regular studio album ("Eat the Beat", 2004) in their backpack, these German's in the hard rocking band Riff Raff have decided to leave the AC/DC sound behind them and try to create their own rock music. All 14 tracks are served on the album 'Leaving D.C' ... For almost one full hour they hammer my speakers with a heavy, hard hitting pace and cool Rock n' Roll. The vocalist Steve Betteridge is a true rock voice with the right dust and rasp in the throat and in several songs he sounds just like a younger Brian Johnson. They have also picked a lot up from the Australians, but mixed it up with some American south blues/rock. They have created an album with both heavy metal tracks and some catchy heavy blues songs. I like when they surprise me, like in 'Miracle Man' and turn into a technical prog rocking band with heavy riffs and an unexpected tempo. Most of the tracks are easy to put into the 'save folder' because they don't try to get any prices for the lyrics or so. Their focus is on the chouruses, the blasting guitars and it works out just fine. But if they try to leave the AC/DC sound it doesn't really work, like in 'Long Live The Night', because that track sounds more like AC/DC than the orginals did on the 'Black Ice' album. A great song! The title track is another splendid song with some cool guitar hooks and twists. Party song no. 1 on the album is the up-tempo track "Dance Or Die "with nice skills from Andreas Schulz behind the drum kit. The overall score for Riff Raff is a strong OK. I wished that they would have included for more of their own ideas of rock and less AC/DC influences, but if you played the best rock songs in the world, it's hard to leave it all behind. If you like old school, straight forward rock n roll this is something for you to check-out. Line up: Steve Betteridge - vocals, Ricky Grasser - guitar, Zoltan Berta - guitar, Anderas Schwacke - bass and Andreas Schultz - drums. | ||||||||||||||||||
