Let’s set the mood, turn the lights down low, light the black candles, put the headphones on, close your eyes and let the best Doom Metal band in the world blow your mind for 50 minutes & take you away to a land of Demons, Witches, Dead Prophets, Dragons and more.

Let me start out by saying "Psalms for the Dead" is the best album Candlemass has released in 20 years, sure it’s no "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" or "Nightfall", but damn it comes so fucking close. I can feel so much passion & atmosphere in the all the songs on "Psalms for the Dead" & the vocal delivery from the stunning voice of Rob Lowe has such conviction, he makes you believe that you are actually in the mad world of Leif Edling dancing with the Dead Demons & Riding the Dragons.

I can’t pick out any favorite tracks, because all of them are of equal quality. The main ingredients that make Candlemass such a legacy in Doom Metal are oozing all over this album. The heavy wall of guitar riffs, the soaring solos, the amazing vocals & are rhythm section any band would kill for are all here. At times they do get close to sounding like classic "Black Sabbath" especially on 'Dancing in the Temple (of the Mad Queen Bee)', I swear I can see a Fairy Wearing Boots!!!!!!! And the 'Killing of the Sun' has that same feeling like you have been there before, or have you?

"Psalms for the Dead" ends with 'Black As Time', which has a little quirky spoken word at the beginning that really does emphasize that time does fucking always win in the end. "Time is short. Time is endless. Time is linier, but also a relative factor that moves rather unnoticed from point A to B. Time is a force not to be taken lightly, because time never forgets. Time heals nothing. Time is a black hole that consumes energy, ambition and love. Time is dangerous. Time, quite frankly, doesn’t give a shit. And above all, time is black. It is your enemy. Time is decline and decay. Time is death. It follows you everywhere you go until it inexorably leaves you behind. Time counts your every step, every year, month, week and minute….tick, tock, tick, tock. And when the reaper breathes you in the neck, it is there stealing the very limited precious shares of time that are left. Slowly and almost unnoticed, second by second…tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock…it continues the countdown closer to your grave, until it finally stops.”

Finally if this is the final album from Candlemass, according to all reports it will be (I hope not), then "Psalms for the Dead" is a fitting soundtrack for their funeral. "The band has played the spot lights burn, all that's left are "Psalms for the Dead".

"Psalms for the Dead" is also getting a pretty cool vinyl release, so make sure you check out the plastic...

Pure Epic Doom Metal Fuck Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!

Stay Heavy.
