I saw and heard this Copenhagen band a couple of years ago at Aalborg Metal Festival. I thought they were bloody excellent.

With 'Premonitions', By The Patient have most certainly just supported that notion. This is a really, really good album!

By The Patient have put together which combines a slightly sludgy sound with technical death metal, bordering on the progressive. The goal is not catchiness or pleaser pop metal a la In Flames. If anything, we're more in the neighbourhood of Mastodon or Gojira; the emphasis is on musicality, power and brutality.

If I were to highlight one tune from 'Premonitions', I would go for Veil of Depression. The song holds in it an element of sadness worthy of the best doom bands out there, even if it at the same time crushes with merciless death metal brutality. In other words: We have a band here who are able to purport heavy music with emotion which sinks in, instead of just playing rip and tear riffs. That I like.

'Premonitions' is a musically diverse and promising release from a young band who my old bones tell me has the potential to go far. Check them out - they deserve attention!
