Who would have thought that one of Germany's premier power metal bands would transform into a classic heavy metal band? Edguy does still have their own sound and identity but have much to my surprise adopted sounds and influences from bands like Uriah Heep, Thin Lizzy, Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin into their sound universe.
Who would ever have imagined a Hammond organ would play a major part in the Edguy sound? Well it does on "Year of the Joker", and with great success!
Who would have thought that Edguy's sound would be described as old school and organic? Not many, but the sound is back-to-basics analogue and very organic.
Who would have thought the result would be Edguy's most complete and most adventurous to date? No me, but I like the new direction a lot...
Who will hate this new direction? The pure hard-core power metal fanatics, who only want fast and furious pounding drums, fast guitar runs up and down the board and a high pitched vocalist singing about dragons, swords and battles...
Who can strongly recommend this new outburst from a band I thought had started repeating themselves? Me, so do listen to this new album with an open mind and be surprised!
