"We are the Brokenhearted" with Beggars & Thieves is released by Frontiers Records on December 2nd. Beggars & Thieves with Louie Merlino (vocals) and Ronnie Mancuso (guitar) was formed in the late 80s and released their self-titled debut album in 1990. During the production of the second album, the Grunge rock had had a massive breakthrough and put B&T together with all the hair bands into the closet and was put on hold until now.
The NYC based duo recruited the drummer Erik Gloege (Rob Trujillo) and a 22 year old bassist, Blake Newman as a rejuvenating injection on the album. Louie's voice holds a classic american rock mode and is stabil and clear, especially in all the ballad songs. Fans of bands like Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Warrant in their slow and sleazy tracks have something to discover with B&T's "WATB". "We Come Undone" is a nice track which is the best song in my ears, and no other track reaches this level on the entire album. "Oil & Water" has a calm and gentle intro and is the next song on the album, the track develops into one of the top songs by a incredible guitar performance from Ronnie. "Innocence" is more of a regular rock track with big credit to Mr. Mancuso. "NGSYA" is a pale sleeping pill without any stunning musical somersaults. Skipbutton! I find myself waiting for the spice on the album but the delicious flavor is Ronnies catchy guitar playing.
After some so-so mid tempo pace songs, I had to wait until the last track before something got my big eyebrows to lift a bit. I had hoped that the production was stronger and a little more variety in the tempo had snug into the songs. For now, it felt a bit too smooth and brushed flat. The musical knowledge is there and with a little tougher attitude, this albums could be fine, but from me it will get a grade in the average area.
