Twenty years on down the line, German Mirror of
Deception still have a great deal to give the world of Doom. 'A Smouldering
Fire' is a must-try for old-school Doom fans of Saint Vitus and Cirith Ungol.
There's a late-seventies, early-eighties spirit in this music, its sound
unpolished and fragile, with a underground feel throughout. What makes Mirror of
Deception special is that there is also an almost folk-like ring to what they
do.
Michael S's voice is an acquired taste by all means, shrill almost, in places,
but it works with this material.
If nothing else, then check out the track Walking Through the Clouds or the slow,
traditional doomy piece Sojourner. Those two alone sell the album for yours
truly.
