W.E.T. is
an acronym for the bands Work Of Art, Eclipse & Talisman. In other words: three
of the leading names on the Swedish AOR/melodic hard rock scene. And that’s
actually it. You take the three aforementioned bands and mix it all up. There
you go, a brilliant album!
…Is it just
me or was that EXACTLY what you expected too? I mean, it seems a bit too
predictable to me. The fact that W.E.T. also adds a rich lather of that old
JOURNEY-cream is a bit too much. We’ve heard this a million times before.
Nothing new under the sun. Nada!
Were it not
for those beautiful lungs of Jeff Scott Soto and that utterly professional
musicianship, I could have devoured this album in the same manner as I devour
most albums sounding this way; it tastes good but you don’t crave a second
portion, if you get my drift. The band, however, belongs to the top of the
Frontiers roster when it comes to performance. The music itself is, as I hint
at, nothing out of the ordinary.
I had high
hopes for this release. I wish Frontiers had moulded something new into being,
something earth-shattering like an all-star collaboration of historical
proportions.
Well, maybe
next time!
