Most people know Justin Hawkins from his ex-band the Darkness in which he participated from 2000-2006. In 2008 he decided to start Hot Leg. It should not be a surprise that Justin wrote songs heavily influenced by classic hard rock and glam metal bands back in the 80's such as: AC/DC, Queen, Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Van Halen, ZZ Top and Poison.

I'm always a bit hesitant when I see guys who use more make-up than my own wife, and with titles such as "Gay in the 80's" and lyrics such as: "No one came out, Nobody was ever going to shout, Homosexuality, Is what I'm all about". But I will ignore all of those things that distract me from the musical part. The first song "Chickens" is one of the funniest and in my opinion best songs on the album, the very very very high (raise to a square) falsetto singing of Justin will not be liked by everybody, but I can see the fun of it. Some Queen influences are there and later on in the songs you also hear some The Tubes references.

With songs like the anti Idols and X-factor song "Ashamed" and "Cocktails" (Cock, cock, cocktails) Justin shows that he still has a lot of humour. I understand why a lot of people run away with this new band, especially live they could create a big party. Musically however I don't find enough excitement, I have heard most of the riffs before. For me it is all too wimpy and glamorous and not enough balls! This might be a welcome change for those people who still miss the glam bands from the 80's.
