This is the second album of Calabrese, the first named “13 Halloweens”. The band hails from the state of Arizona, and consists of three actual brothers, with the (actual) last name Calabrese… Their style I would describe as a development of the Ramones/Misfits sound of punk rock, maybe with a twist towards something like Adam and the Ants, and at the same time some mainstream modern heavy rock. In their best moments they sometimes sound somewhat like our local (Danish) Gob Squad. Someone also calls this “Horror Rock”, but I think it has kind of a cheesy ring to it, and cheesy doesn’t fit this genre very well in my opinion, then the term punk (with an idea of rebelling against the establishment) would be very misplaced. The cover and the lyrics leads the thoughts to a cartoon- and B horror movie-like universe, and then you can then maybe ask yourself what punk rock and horror movies has in common…I don’t know either. The artwork is quite okay, and I guess the horror-image is a way to give the band a profile trying to break through to the public. The guitar(s) are typically punk/heavy-sounding, and like the drums walking/skip-jumping/running ahead most of the time. The compositions are generally rather simple, but with a good drive. The singing is switching between the typical punk rock yelling and a lot of oooh-oooh-oooh-chorus. After listening to the whole album I’m stuck with a feeling of missing some more variation in between the numbers, they get a little too much alike. Not a bad album, and probably good for a live situation or for some beers with friends, I kinda liked it, but it will not be something that will stick with me for long and become classic material. And what a crappy end with a commercial for their fan-club and merchandise: “… for just 13 $...”, hope that was mostly a joke… |
