Blackwood Creek - Kip Winger is back to the roots! The band is his first music project together with his brother Nate on drums and Peter Fletcher on guitar. Blackwood Creek started in 1969 performing songs by their favorite bands Grand Funk, Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin. But in 1980 the guys went their separate ways. Kip joined Alice Cooper's band and after that formed his famous band Winger.
Blackwood Creek reformed in 2007 to record 11 new songs which embody 40 years of blood, sweat and tears of the three musicians who started out together, went their separate ways and reform on common ground. The music is light-hearted and it is played in a happy-go-lucky way. Indeed the diverse vocals are catchy. The voices stream at pitch with amazing freshness. But as a whole - too much experience! Blackwood Creek are retelling stories about the times of childhood and the land of dreams.
The gender of Blackwood Creek is based on the post-hippie period of a gentleman hard rock. And it has a pinch of progressive rock sound! All of this is plunged into a recognizable blues and pours us up with a good party-time mood. The self titled debut album is without claims and at the same time it is too ripe! It represents a polished music history with a strong AOR (Adult Oriented Rock) sound. The album combines rockabilly from Creedence Clearwater Revival and hard rock, characteristic about the unification of Kingdom Come and the contemporary Marillion.
"After Your Heart" is recommended as a beautiful performed and recorded ballad. It’s more impressing than the next track – again a ballad named “Albatross”. But “Wooden Shoe” may be seen as its rival. The album contains music of high quality and depth! It is worth checking out. If you are not into hard rock – you will hear Blackwood Creek on the radio for sure! The songs are, for the most part, exciting and contain a lot of great elements but without the passionate fire of the youth!
