Mourning Dawn hails from France and they play a very dark and doomy form of Depressive Metal.
Mourning Dawn started out as a one man band, created by Laurent from the Doom Metal band Inborn Suffering. After 2 demos and 1 EP that received very good reviews from the critics Laurent decided to take Mourning Dawn to the next step.
The next step is just what I have been listening to for the past 8 days or so, namely their first full-length debut album simply titled “Mourning Dawn”.
So now Laurent surrounds himself with a real line-up to give the band the possibility to spread its music on stage and I’m sure it will be a journey into a very depressive, dark, melancholic and gloomy world. Because that’s what this debut album is all about… sickness, misery, despair and pain.
We get 8 songs and almost 60 minutes of Dark Doom Metal with an alright production limited to a 1000 copies... so better be quick if you wish to check this band out.
Well is it any good? Yes it is quite good and yet I miss something… It’s is gloomy music alright, but some of the songs seems to last forever… but maybe that’s the point?
This CD needed some time in my hard-tried CD-player to grow on me and I was actually ready to give it up, but suddenly I was in the right mood for this kind of Metal and it started to grow… slowly but surely. And it wins a little with every spin.
The pace is slow most of the time and the guitars are haunting you to put it simple… but still quite melodic at the same time. The vocals are “growls with feeling” and Laurent do really sound like he is in despair and in pain, that’s for sure.
The best track in my opinion could very well be “Innocence Leaves”. This track starts with a very creepy atmosphere that could scare the living shit out of every Michael Jackson fan. Slowly the song develops from the creepy atmosphere into church bells and then into one hell of a dark and gloomy Doom/Black Metal song. Damn it sounds like Laurent is being tortured… very creepy indeed.
In my opinion music like this needs some time to grow and I have to be in the right mood for it. But if you’re a hardcore fan of dark, gloomy, atmospheric Doom/Black Metal I’m sure that you will swallow this album with pain and pleasure.
Do check it out… and do check out Laurent’s other band Inborn Suffering as well and be DOOMED!
