In my book, British death avant-gardes Akercocke get a lot of points for daring and experimentation. You get run-of-the-mill death metal alongside downright weirdness and odd passages with theatrical vocals that come close to progressive 70s rock of sorts and this, in theory, makes ‘Antichrist’ an interesting piece of music.

What isn’t so interesting, on the other hand, is the lousy sound of the album, and this is a real turndown. This is 2007, not 1987.

I’ve listened to this album many, many times by now - perhaps I feel an urge to like it somehow. But my conclusion is that ‘Antichrist’ doesn’t add up in the end. As nonconformist as it stands out, as annoying it is at length.

Sorry – not my cup of tea.
